New Academic Year

November 9, 2011

This is the time of year that there seems to be a lot of bureacratic tidying up that needs to take place.  Often Governing Bodies (GBs) forget to carry out these menial tasks and then later on get into ‘hot water’.  Some things that you should be looking into right now are:

1. Ensuring that all committees are properly staffed and that there is the required quorate

2. Ensuring that the committess have agreed to the terms of reference for the year.  My advice to all is to have the clerk hold all this information in one file and this is issued to all governors at this time of year and these ToRs are raitifed in bulk.  It just reduces the amount of work you need to do.

3. Make sure that your committes have a chair and also a clerk has been identified.  There is nothing worse that having to write up minutes for these committees retrospectively since no one was doing the job at the time.

4. Delegated powers to the individual committees etc have also got to be ratified.
