I started as a governor in 2000 when my children were in primary school.  Since then I have been a Chair of Governors for one of Manchester’s largest primary schools, have been asked by the local authority (they still existed then!!!) to help with a school that was in Special Measures and I have also been shortlisted for a Teaching Award (Governor) in 2007.   I stayed on as a governor at the school in Special Measures, then helped them move to a soft federation and eventually a hard federation of two schools.   We recently became a Multi Academy Trust and now hoping to open a new school to serve the community.    I became a National Leader of Governance in May 2013!  This means that I have also been trained to carry our Reviews of Governance.

I never intended to stay on as a school governor once my children left primary school but the longer I stayed the more interested I became in the  process of raising standards in schools and ensuring that all children, not just those with the very articulate parents (!), had access to a high standard of education.

As a governor nowadays, we can sometimes forget ourselves and just focus on the data and the current levels of attainment, and the latest policy changes from the DfE.  Whilst I firmly believe that understanding the data and holding schools to account is incredibly important, it is also vital that as governors we keep the big picture in mind – that of educating the whole child.  Levels and sublevels don’t always capture this information. But going into a school whilst children are there does!

This blog started as a means of me keeping track of  the information I was receiving regarding Governing Bodies.  However, it has slowly expanded.  Please feel free to use what you need for your governing bodies but you need to also be mindful of any external copyrights etc.

    Really appreciate your comments about data and attainment, and especially about “the big picture” – educating the whole child. Good luck with creating a much-needed resource for school governors and others.
